HTML & CSS: Why the Fundamentals Matter Most

One of the most common mistakes I see in people starting out is the urge to jump straight to React, Vue, or the framework of the month 😅. I get it — frameworks look more interesting and more relevant in job listings. But the developers who move fastest later are almost always the ones who took HTML and CSS seriously first.

🧱 What happens without fundamentals

Without a real grasp of semantic HTML and CSS layout, you hit the same wall over and over: you copy snippets without knowing what they do, you fight CSS bugs you can't diagnose, and you're completely dependent on the framework for everything — including things the browser already does for free.

🎯 What "solid fundamentals" actually means

Concretely, these are the things worth owning before any framework:

  • Semantic HTML — using header, nav, main, article, button for what they mean, not div for everything.
  • The box model — how margin, border, padding, and content stack up to make an element's size.
  • Flexbox and Grid — laying out a page without reaching for a library.
  • CSS custom properties — reusable variables for color, spacing, and themes.
  • Responsive design — adapting to screen size with media queries, no framework required.

💡 One example: centering, the old way vs. now

For years people googled "how to center a div" and pasted magic incantations. Once you understand Flexbox, it's three lines you actually understand:

That's the difference fundamentals make: not memorizing a trick, but knowing why it works — so you can adapt it when the layout changes.

📈 The long-term investment

A developer who deeply understands HTML and CSS will always outpace one who knows React but not what the browser is doing underneath. The framework changes every few years; the box model doesn't. The investment in fundamentals pays off fast, and it keeps paying.

AI performs best when paired with strong knowledge. Invest in learning to unlock its full potential. AI is not a replacement for humans — it's a tool to enhance human capabilities.
